We have this sense of discontent that we can’t quite put our finger on. We seek more meaning and connection in our life, but how do we find the time or energy?

INTRODUCTION
Dare to Fly
I dare you to dream. I double dare you. Come on, you know you want to. You’ve held back for long enough; kept it all bottled up inside for the sake of your family and friends; taking care of and trying to please everyone else but you. Now it’s your time to shine! It’s time to dig deep, excavate your divine genius and step into your true self – your brilliance. It’s okay. You’re safe. Nothing can hold you back unless you choose for it to.
When I was around 35 years old I experienced an awakening. I suddenly realized that my life, which looked perfect on the outside, was not so perfect after all, because I wasn’t completely being true to myself and the desires in my heart. I was on the verge of really stepping into the person I was meant to be. The image that kept popping into my head was of being inside a large bird cage suspended in midair. The door of the cage was open, inviting me to simply step out and fly, but my fear and insecurities kept me locked inside. I wanted so badly to be free of the confinement my life felt like. At the same time I had grown comfortable where I was. I was in a rut yes, but it was my rut! I was weary from struggling to identify myself. I wanted to be safe and yet wanted to throw caution to the wind and step out and fly.
In my imagination I stood at that open door frozen with fear. There were times when I would imagine stepping out and flying. Oh what freedom, exhilaration and complete trust.
The cage represented my outward identity. I had fashioned this cage from sturdy metal, comprised of the roles I was attempting to juggle in life – pilot’s wife, mom, business woman, daughter and sister to name a few. Also present in its sturdy composition was an accumulation of my failures, successes, accomplishments and the conclusions I drew about myself as a result of them. All of this defined me and confined me to be this person who I suddenly realized was not me at all, and whom I had grown to resent and feel trapped by.
But I was ready to discover more. I sensed there was more, much more to me that I didn’t know or perhaps had forgotten. I wanted to rediscover me. So I embarked on a new journey to remember the real me. What I discovered, and what I know today, is that I AM – a whole, perfect, spiritual, brilliant, beautiful, sexual, wise, fun, intuitive, innovator, resourceful, creative woman of genius! And not one of these descriptions is a role I play in life or a label I or others put on me. This is who I AM at the core of my being, deep down inside where God resides.
When I went to work to find out who I AM, I read and listened to every self-help, personal development book and audio I could get my hands on. I started running and walking every day while listening to self-help gurus and spiritual teachers that I resonated with. I drank in their wisdom and teachings, and began integrating them into my life as a wife, mom, and entrepreneur. I was so excited about this new direction my life was taking. I began to feel connected and on purpose. I was energized, on fire, unstoppable!
Then the resistance came… from my husband and especially from my business. I was so excited about this new way of being that I wanted my husband to join me and change as well. I knew that what I was learning would make a positive difference in our relationship and in our parenting partnership, but he wasn’t convinced and he definitely wasn’t ready. There was resistance in my business because it no longer ‘fit’ me or my new model for living and working. My business at the time was very sales intensive. I struggled to follow my business mentor’s lead by using scripted sales pitches and presentations, but I just wanted to be real and be myself, to build a relationship with my customers and serve them – not convince, coerce and scare them into what I had to offer. With my business degree and experience I might have looked successful on the outside, but I didn’t feel successful inside.
What I’ve learned is that in order for me to have a real experience of success inside and out I first need to know who I am and be confident and comfortable with that. I need to embrace every aspect of who I am in order to integrate all of the aspects of my true self into whatever I’m doing, whether it’s as a mom, wife or business owner.
For many years I operated in life with this sense of being straddled between two apparent opposing identities. For example, mom versus career women; spiritual being versus business owner; fun loving free spirit versus responsible adult; spiritual versus religious. This caused a lot of stress and overwhelm in my life. It was like literally having one foot in one world or identity and the other foot in another. It was a full blown identity crisis and I felt like I was being pulled apart at the middle!
The disconnect and disjointedness I thought was a struggle unique to me I now realize is a struggle for many. In a nutshell, this book is about “integration” – bringing all the beautiful and perfect aspects of you to the roles you play. I use the term “I AM” in a spiritual sense and it represents the wholeness of you. My hope is that by my sharing with you openly some my life experiences I might spark something inside you as you look at your own life. I want to ignite that light in your soul where your genius lives. I want for you too, to discover and fully embrace your true I AM. By reflecting back on your life, you will find where your core gifts have shone through. You have experienced much in your lifetime – some victories, some challenges. And from both there is potential for wisdom, power and blessings to come– that is if you are awake to them and if you choose to see them.
The purpose of this book is to share with you what has worked for me in ultimately experiencing my life authentically, with passion, purpose, and abundance. The truth is that I still have my share of challenges, so there are certain strategies and practices I find that are foundationally necessary for me to consciously live my most authentic and truly successful life. I’ve come to depend on them as I continue to grow into my own genius, and especially when I start to get off track. My prayer is that I might inspire and guide you as you allow your own genius life to unfold, by listening to what your life has to teach you about who you are.
Think of your life as your genius school. You already have learned much that qualifies you to successfully embark on your journey as a conscious entrepreneur or whatever it is you feel called to do. From what you have learned and continue to gain knowledge of, you will be designing your own systems, strategies and daily actions that are authentic to you and support your unique personal mission and vision. If you are like me (and I suspect we are a lot alike), you probably don’t like being told what to do anyway, so now you are free to do it your way. As someone with entrepreneurial spirit deep down, you are a rule breaker – “a rebel with a cause” – and I’m encouraging you to go ahead and break those rules that have trapped you in a life that is not as passionate, purposeful and prosperous as you would like. I’m encouraging you, maybe even lovingly, pushing you to finally step out and fly.
